End of Week Two

Yes! The second week of school has ended and this week, I learned about CAPITALIZATION. Worksheets regarding capitalization and how it is properly used in writing was handed out and there were numerous exercises. Besides capitalization, however, the class also focused on revision, the third stage of the writing process. We read a student model essay and saw what our reflective essays needed and what should be improved on.

Another concept we learned this week is: show-don’t-tell. Given a statement, I had to describe it to an audience instead of simply stating it and it took a lot of effort as well as descriptive detail and adjectives. Then sample descriptions were discussed with the class and boy, was it hard to get a perfect description.

I can’t wait to see what we learn this week!

My First Post and Weekly Log

Hey everyone,

This is officially my first post! It is also my first entry for Expository Writing class’ weekly log! So here it goes!

This week, I learned a lot about reflective essays. Starting the class by reading a reflective essay gave me a good sense of what a reflective essay is like as well as the feelings, thoughts and description the author, Alice Walker, put into her work. I was able to analyze the story and I believe that the training does me good for the upcoming AP English test in May, especially when the class contributed their ideas and therefore, I was able to view the story from different perspectives.

In addition to reflective essays, I also learned several new base words I had only vague definitions to, such as “cosmo” and “bibli.” These base words come in handy when you come across a word you do not know and by recognizing a part of the word, you might be able to guess what the word means. This is also helpful for the SAT I test!

For the most part, I also learned how to express my feelings more effectively and efficiently through the “journal” activity at the beginning of every class! Being a huge fan of creative writing, I also enjoyed the show-not-tell assignment!

That’s all!
